The later firm of Messenger and Co. Ltd., are probably best remembered for their greenhouses, especially their larger bespoke structures built for their more prestigious customers. However, they built a whole range of greenhouses from the pre-sized small amateur greenhouse, known as ‘cheap’, through large structures for commercial nurseries to the large and impressive bespoke structures. This mix of bespoke and “off the shelf” was started by Thomas Messenger very early on and it appears that he rapidly started providing the full range of designs as well as meeting customers’ own special requirements.

There are essentially two forms of greenhouses that are used by gardeners, both amateur and professional, the forcing house and propagating house.
